Sunrise biscuit kitchen in chapel hill9/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() My wife liked all four biscuits equally while the favorites were clear for me: I liked the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit the best followed by the biscuit and gravy. Overall, my wife and I thought these biscuits were delicious. The Bad Grampa Biscuit is a chicken biscuit with bacon, egg, and cheese. * Country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 * Sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 They churned orders out quick without a hiccup. During our visit, it ran like a well-oiled machine. They do serve sides like hash browns ($1.19) and grits ($1.59) as well as hot dogs ($2.39) and basic sandwiches and burgers (all $3.99 or less). Nothing surprising nor inventive, just traditional Southern comfort food. Biscuits start as low as $1.19 and can get expensive as $7.48 if you order their special "Bad Grampa" biscuit. The menu is simple and the prices are very affordable. They open early (6am, Monday-Saturday and 7am, Sunday) and close early (2:30pm, daily). Sunrise is open during breakfast and lunch hours only. We showed up close to 9am on a Saturday and there were only two cars ahead of us though a steady stream of customers quickly built up behind us. We've read about and seen pictures of the lines for this place, but I guess we got lucky. While the Louisburg location has seating for on-site dining, this location does not. ![]() This review is for the only other location which is situated in a small freestanding building in Chapel Hill, north of UNC's campus. The original restaurant opened in 1977-78 in Louisburg, northeast of Raleigh. “But every day that we’re closed just eats my guts up I don’t like being closed.I found Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen thanks to Yelp, but this restaurant has been around decades before Yelp even existed. “We’re fortunate that it happened in the summer because we’re slower now,” said Allen. Optimistically, he said the Sunrise drive-thru in Chapel Hill could reopen in two weeks, although he said three was more likely. She also invited those from Chapel Hill to make the trip to Louisburg, “so that they can actually come in and sit down and get a feel for the locals and the good food.”Īllen said the Chapel Hill location is working through the process to be able to reopen. When taking her son to an appointment while living in Virginia Beach, Patterson said the orthodontist recognized her as “the biscuit girl” from their time in Chapel Hill. Whether in Louisburg or Chapel Hill, Patterson said the product is something that can connect small town residents with UNC graduates across the country. “A lot of the people that live here, their kids have worked here or they worked here. “We hire a lot of young people, right out of high school or actually still in high school it’s their first job,” she said. She called Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen a “gathering place for the community.” Patterson knows most of those repeat customers by name, as she talks about family and the happenings of the town of a little more than 3,000 people. “Most of the people here are repeat customers,” she said on Monday morning at the restaurant, which has a drive-thru and seating. If you make the trek to Louisburg, you’ll probably run into Janet Patterson - the general manager. Ownership partners split, and the Henderson and another location in Oxford are now known as Sunrise Biscuit Company. In fact, the Louisburg Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen opened a year after the original location, which was in Henderson. The Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Louisburg opened in 1978, six years before the Chapel Hill location was opened. A little more than an hour away from University Place in Chapel Hill, you can still get a Sunrise biscuit. There are other local breakfast choices where you can get a good biscuit, but for those who are eager to scratch their Sunrise itch, there is one solution – it just involves a bit of a drive. “I’m out and about and sometimes people find out that I own Sunrise, and their face just lights up,” restaurant owner David Allen said, adding that everyone associated with Sunrise appreciated the well wishes from fans on social media as word of the fire spread.
